Etymology: One has derived the word from βράζω, comparing βαμβρασμός καχλασμός; βαμβράσσει ὀργίζεται (Cyr.) in the idea that the fish was called after the sound it makes (`when fried?', adds DELG); on the principle s. Strömberg Fischnamen 63ff. Improbable; rather Pre-Gr., given the variants. For the formation cf. τενθρηδών, τερηδών (Schwyzer 529f., Chantr., Form. 360f.).
